Recent Job: 50L Electric Hot Water System Replaced at an Annerley Apartment

Old grey Rheem electric storage hot water system before replacement in Annerley.

Service: Electric Hot Water

Location: Annerley, Brisbane

An older electric hot water system needed to be replaced at this one-bedroom Annerley apartment.

The homeowner needed the new unit installed in the same compact area as the existing grey Rheem system. Keeping the new system in this position also allowed it to connect to the apartment’s existing water and electrical services.

We removed the old unit and installed a new 50L electric storage hot water system.

The Older System Needed to Be Replaced

The existing grey Rheem unit was an older electric storage hot water system.

A working hot water supply is important in a one-bedroom apartment with one bathroom. If the unit stopped heating, the homeowner could lose hot water for showering, washing and cleaning.

The replacement was planned as a changeover, with the new system installed in the same location as the old unit.

Removing the Old Hot Water System

Before removing the old system, we isolated the water and electrical supplies.

The tank was drained and disconnected from the apartment’s hot and cold water lines. The grey Rheem system was then removed to make room for the replacement unit.

Installing the New 50L System

A new 50L electric storage hot water system was installed in the same location.

The work included:

  • Connecting the new system to the hot and cold water lines
  • Installing a new isolating valve
  • Installing a temperature and pressure relief valve and drain
  • Installing the required control and safety valves
  • Checking the existing safe tray
  • Installing a water-detection device
  • Having the hard-wired unit connected by a licensed electrician

Using the same position meant the new system could be connected to the apartment’s existing services.

Filling and Checking the New System

Once the plumbing and electrical connections were complete, we filled the new hot water system.

The unit was commissioned, and its operation and temperature were checked. We also checked the new water connections for leaks.

The old system was removed and the work area was cleaned before the job was completed.

  • Installing the required valves and drain
  • Checking the safe tray
  • Installing a water-detection device
  • Having the unit connected by a licensed electrician
  • Filling and commissioning the new system
  • Checking its operation and temperature
  • Checking the water connections for leaks
  • Removing the old system

The homeowner had a newly installed 50L electric storage hot water system in place of the older unit.

What Could Have Happened if the Old System Failed?

If the older hot water system had failed completely, the homeowner could have been left without hot water.

This could have affected everyday tasks such as showering, washing and cleaning until another unit was supplied and installed.

Replacing the old system meant the planned changeover could be completed before a full loss of hot water made the apartment more difficult to use.

Is Your Electric Hot Water System Getting Older?

It may be time to arrange a plumbing check if you notice:

  • Less hot water than usual
  • Water taking longer to heat
  • Changes in water temperature
  • Leaks or dampness around the tank
  • Rust or corrosion
  • Unusual sounds from the system
  • The unit cutting out or failing to heat
